The Maggot is the tenth studio album by Melvins and only the second release by Ipecac upon release on 17 May 1999. It is part of "The Trilogy", a trio of studio albums released upon the start of their working relationship with the label. Notably this album serves as one of their most abrasive and heavy works.

Background[]

Writing and Recording[]

Upon being signed to Ipecac Recordings the Melvins would begin work on their next studio album at the time with then new bassist Kevin Rutmanis but in a twist the band opted to present three albums in the span of one year to the label to which owner Mike Patton agreed. The band recorded two contrasting albums in the same sessions, that of which being this album and The Bootlicker. The end of this record features a bit of digital silence and a spooky sample of "Toy" to transition to the next album.

On the CD version all songs are split into two tracks presumably as a joke towards the rising trend of MP3 downloading at the time and to confuse those who pirated music. Notably it's also the first Melvins album to feature the "mirrored" artwork with the back cover being the "album cover" while the front cover had the barcode and track information, a decision backed by Buzzo as a means to "have more space for art". A 2006 reissue of the album swaps the background artwork with The Bootlicker.

The Trilogy Vinyl[]

The Trilogy was later released on vinyl by Ipecac Recordings (The Trilogy Vinyl, IPC-011, November 27, 2000) with the other two albums in said trilogy. On the back sleeve of the vinyl a warning is included that reads, "Contents include imagery that may be considered offensive or dangerous. Don't be a dumb ass." The artwork is offensive, but is quoted to be a joke by the band with Side B contradicting the artwork of Side A for each vinyl). In the case of The Maggot Side A of the first vinyl is a Swastika and side B is the star of David. Notably the silence and spooky sample of "Toy" is omitted.
