The Bride Screamed Murder is the seventeenth studio album by The Melvins. It would be the third studio album to feature the double-drum lineup, and notably expand further into experimental territories.[1] Along with seven new songs, this album would feature a cover of "My Generation" by The Who and "P.G. x3", an interpretation of the traditional song "Peggy Gordon".

It would notably be the first (and to date, only) Melvins album to chart on the Billboard 200, reaching #200 by selling 2,809 copies in the first few weeks.[2]

Background[]

Work would begin on The Bride Screamed Murder in 2009, with recording finished by early 2010. In some interviews, Buzz Osborne would state that one of the songs on the album was written back in the early 1990s.[3] Details would further surface in the Spring of 2010 as a tour would be lined up with ISIS and Totimoshi surrounding appearances at Bonnaroo Festival and Sled Island.[4] The Bride Screamed Murder would be released on 1 June 2010 via Ipecac Recordings on CD. It would reach #200 on the Billboard 200 by selling 2,809 copies in the first few weeks.[5] A music video for "Electric Flower", produced by Scion A/V, would be released that November.[6][7]

The Bride Screamed Murder's vinyl version was released on Amphetamine Reptile Records in a box featuring different artwork from one of ten different artists, limited to 100 copies each. The artists chosen to provide the artwork were Aesthetic Apparatus, COOP, Molly Osborne (Sold exclusively on tour), Adam Jones, Baseman, Junko Mizuno, Mackie Osborne, HAZE XXL, King Buzzo, and Dalek. An alternate vinyl pressing would be released on 4 January 2015. This is a special art edition of The Bride Screamed Murder, split into two LPs, each LP with a blank side containing a print. A lot of work went into these, including lino cut block prints, silk screens, letterpress prints, stamps and hand-relief printed vinyl. All art by HAZE XXL except the back cover letterpress art/design and printing by Mackie Osborne.

The Bride Screamed Murder would attain mostly positive reviews from critics, currently holding a 77/100 score on Metacritic. Drowned in Sound would award a 7/10, stating the following: "The Bride Screamed Murder isn’t the best Melvins album ever, but it is rarely less than arresting as a listening experience. Moreover, they sound like they’re having a blast, unconstrained by draconian label expectations. (That said, another great thing about these guys is that they sounded like they were having a blast, even when they were signed to Atlantic circa grunge mania and constrained by just that.)".[8] Adrian Bergrand, writing for PopMatters and awarding an 8/10, would praise the chemistry and creativity between the four musicians involved.[9] No Rip Cord also would award an 8/10 score, noting "The Water Glass sets an expectedly goofy and playful tone while also wanting to take your fucking head off.".[10] Lastly, NME would highly praise the album with a 4.5/5 score.[11] The Bride Screamed Murder would rank #8 on Exclaim's Top Ten Metal Albums of 2010,[12] and #19 on The Obelisk's Top 20 Albums of 2010.[13]

Some critics would not be as positive about The Bride Screamed Murder. Pitchfork would score the album a 5.2/10, lauding the general tone of the record and citing The Bride Screamed Murder "as an album full of unfinished sketches and lazy doodles masquerading as proper tunes. The digressions will either come off as failed experiments or unfunny jokes, a handful of good ideas undercut by either their context or their brevity.".[14] While Jay Bennett would award the album a B- and praised the drum performances and production in an article for the New Phoenix Times, stated he was just not into the album and cited it "for die-hards only".[15] Notably, the needle drop[16] and Decibel Magazine would also score the album a 5/10.
