Nadja is a duo of multi-instrumentalist Aidan Baker and bassist Leah Buckareff which formed in 2002. The duo creates music that has been described as ambient doom, dreamsludge, and metalgaze, combining the atmospheric textures of shoegaze and ambient music with the heaviness and volume of metal and noise. They have released numerous recordings on such labels as Alien8 Recordings, Hydrahead Records, Important Records, Essence Music, and their own label, Broken Spine Productions. The duo has toured and performed extensively around the world, appearing at such diverse festivals as SXSW, FIMAV, Roadburn, and Unsound. Originally from Toronto, Canada, the duo now resides in Berlin, Germany.
In addition to Nadja, Baker is also active as a writer, a solo musician, and with the group projects Caudal, B/B/S/, Adoran, Hypnodrone Ensemble, and Whisper Room. He has released many solo albums and is the author of four collections of poetry. Buckareff is also the owner/operator of Coldsnap Bindery, a production house of handmade books, and Pulp Papier, a distributor of Japanese paper. She is also the curator of The Wunderkabinet, a wandering exhibition of art, craft, and curios, and The Lesen Lounge, a mobile zine library. The duo combines soundscape, electronics and atmospheric vocals with slow, epic riffs and dirge-like percussion, creating a slowly moving grand wall of music that has been described as doomgaze, drone, ambient-doom, and shoegazer-metal. Aidan noted that they prefer to call their style of music "ambient metal" or "ambient doom", though he's fond of the term "dreamsludge" as well.[1][2]
History[]
Prior to Nadja's formation, Aidan Baker had been performing in Canada with the project Arc, along with solo performances. Nadja would officially form in 2002 initially with Baker as the sole performer, with Leah Buckareff joining the next year, eventually growing in scope by 2005.[3] The band's first live performance would not be until 20 September 2005 at Sneaky Dee's in Toronto, with the duo's first tour (A tour of Europe) to follow in May 2007.[4] Since forming the band has released over twenty studio albums amid numerous Extended Plays, Compilations and Collaborations.
After several worldwide releases of CDR's on a number of minor limited-edition labels, Nadja released their first album on pro-CD, Truth Becomes Death, in 2005 via the Montreal-based record label Alien8 Recordings. Since then, they have been releasing material on more widespread labels and re-published old records either updated or completely re-composed (for example, Touched was re-recorded in 2007 and re-released via Alien8, as well as Bodycage, which was released via Equation). Nadja has performed in Canada, Europe, Japan, The United States, Australia, New Zealand, Ukraine and Russian along with other artists, including Kayo Dot, Knurl, Khanate, Francisco Lopez, ISIS, Ocean and Mare.
