Lord Dying are a metal quartet from Portland, Oregon who play a signature brand of sludge and doom that has been expanded upon with elements of prog metal and neo-psychedelia. Founded in 2010 amid a fertile underground scene, original members included guitarist/vocalist Erik Olson, guitarist Chris Evans, bassist Don Capuano, and drummer/vocalist Jon Reid. The band released a self-titled demo EP that quickly sold out when they began sharing local stages with Unsane, Red Fang, Yob, and Valient Thorr.[1]

To date Lord Dying have released three studio albums among two extended plays and a demo.

History[]

Lord Dying would be founded in 2010 by Erik Olson, Chris Evans, Dan Capuano and Jon Reid. Early on the band performed largely in Oregon, sharing the stage with the likes of Red Fang, Danava and Yob among others.[2] They would tour the west coast twice, the first time alone, only to meet up with Danava and Lecherous Gaze for a few shows, followed a few months later by another co-headlining tour with local heavy punishers Nether Regions.

Shortly after Lord Dying teamed up with longtime brothers in crime Kelly and Erica G and solidified the first monumental release, Lord Dying “s/t", in 7” form on his Powerblaster Records label. In May/June of 2012 Lord Dying travelled coast to coast and played some shows as direct support for Black Cobra and Gaza to eventually meet with Witch Mountain and tour with them as direct support for several weeks, followed by a tour in late October to support Red Fang and Black Tusk for another U.S, tour. Lord Dying would gain attention from the likes of Relapse Records, signing with the label on 16 January 2013.[3]

Lord Dying's debut album Summon The Faithless would see release on 9 July 2013 to positive reviews. Following tours with Howl and Valient Thorr, Lord Dying would tour Europe for the first time alongside Red Fang and The Shrine, appearing at festivals such as Roadburn Festival and Scion RockFest.[4] Returning to the States and touring with BL'AST!, Brant Bjork and Corrosion of Conformity, Lord Dying would begin work on a follow-up between tours at Audio Siege Studios in Portland, OR that May along with attaining a new drummer in Rob Shaffer.[5][6]

Poisoned Altars would see release via Relapse on 31 January 2015 to positive reviews.[7][8] Lord Dying would tour extensively throughout North America to support Poisoned Altars, sharing the stage with the likes of Anvil, Misery Index, Crowbar and Toxic Holocaust just to name a few, followed by two tours of Europe and another tour of North America the next year.

Lord Dying would take time off from touring, eventually settling on the lineup of Olson, Evans, Matt Price and Chase Manhattan, recording at West Valley Recording Studios in Los Angeles circa August 2018. Drawing from themes of death and developing more of a progressive sound,[9] Mysterium Tremendum would see release on 26 March 2019 via eOne to critical acclaim.[10][11] Kevin Swartz and Alyssa Mocare-Pike would join the rhythm section in time for a tour of Europe to support the album, including appearances at Desertfest Belgium, Into The Void and Damnation Festival.[12]
