Everybody Loves Sausages is a studio album by The Melvins, released in April 2013 via Ipecac Recordings. Notably it's an album of covers hand-selected by the band and reflecting on music that heavily influenced the group as a whole. Notably it also spawned a spin-off series via Amphetamine Reptile Records entitled Nine Clowns of The Apocalypse that featured ten of the thirteen tracks, along with additional covers in the same sessions.

Notably this album also features a wide arrangement of guests in similar fashion to their 2000 album The Crybaby, including three tracks with the Melvins Lite lineup and four tracks with the double-drum lineup in some capacity.

Background[]

On 8 February 2013 Everybody Loves Sausages would be announced, displaying a covers album of bands that had a major influence on the Melvins' sound.[1] Buzz Osborne, along with writing liner notes for each band on the album, would state the following about the album: "This record will give people a peek into the kind of things that influence us musically. We REALLY like all of these songs along with the bands who actually wrote this stuff because first and foremost, we are HUGE music fans."[2]

The album, along with featuring the Melvins lineup at the time (Buzzo, Dale, Jared and Coady) on four songs, the album featured the Melvins Lite lineup on three tracks and the remaining songs with various collaborators. Notably Kevin Rutmanis would perform with Jello Biafra on the Roxy Music cover "In Every Dream Home A Heartache", the first time Rutmanis had recorded with the band in nearly a decade. Notably "Heathen Earth" would be credited to Throbbing Gristle though the song presented only resembles the band's sound (As "Heathen Earth" would be the name of a live album rather than a song.) as Buzzo would describe it as "Throbbing Gristle in the way they would have done it.".

Everybody Loves Sausages received generally positive reviews from various critics. Matt Filton, writing for The Sludgelord, highly praised the album from start to finish and cited the album as "heavy, loud, weird and completely excellent.".[3] Despite rating the album a 6.5/10 Pitchfork would speak positively of the album, giving notable praise to "Set It On Fire", "In Every Dream Home A Heartache", "Station To Station" and "Female Trouble".[4] Exclaim! would award a 7/10, notably praising the Bowie and Roxy Music covers and closing their review describing it as "full of explosive moments of weirdness and a sinuous, smirking intelligence."[5] Consequence of Sound would state that Everybody Loves Sausages would exceed every expectation for a covers album and that the "reverence" can be heard in the covers.[6]

Nine Clowns Of The Apocalypse[]

Everybody Loves Sausages has no vinyl edition but rather has all of it's songs spread out through a total of eleven different releases. Prior to the release of Everybody Loves Sausages three of the songs had been previously released on vinyl. "Black Betty" previously appeared on a split 7" with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion covering the same track.[7] Notably this song was commissioned by Volkswagen for a potential commercial to be unveiled at the 2011 Super Bowl but ultimately the Jon Spencer rendition was chosen.[8]

"Female Trouble" and "Carpe Diem" were both previously featured on a split 12" with Redd Kross entitled New Years Eve Ball Room Blitz, limited to 350 copies and released on 31 December 2012.

The remaining ten songs would be issued as part of a series entitled Nine Clowns of The Apocalypse via Amphetamine Reptile Records, between 2013 and 2015. Seven of these singles also featured b-sides recorded in the same sessions with the same collaborators, exclusive to these singles. Later on a physical box would be released for the set, along with collectible shirts and buttons. Notably the "Tribute to Throbbing Gristle" (Which also featured a flexi as a bonus.) lists more tracks than what is presented for reasons unknown. This would be essentially a hint towards a Thorbbing Gristle tribute album, released in 2023 for the band's 40th anniversary.

All nine singles would see small print re-issues in 2016 and 2017, attaining a further rarity and collectors value.

"Heathen Earth", "Subhuman" and "Hamburger Lady" would all appear on the 2023 album Throbbing Jazz Gristle Funk Hits.

The initial release dates for the actual 7" singles are as follows:

  • A Tribute to Venom - 19 July 2013
