Baby Woodrose are a psychedelic garage rock band formed in Copenhagen, Denmark. Forming in 2001 initially as a solo project of one Uffe Lorenzen aka Lorenzo Woodrose, it would evolve into a full band though some albums would be recorded and performed solo while others would feature his backing musicians. Initially the band also functioned as a side project while Lorenzen was active with On Trial but evolved into his full-time band once he got tired of playing drums.

Along with being highly active touring through Europe, Baby Woodrose would be a highly productive band, releasing nine studio albums and well over a dozen singles before Lorenzen would begin performing solo under his own name in 2017.

The band's name from the Argyreia nervosa, a plant commonly known as Hawaiian baby woodrose, which can be used for hallucinogenic effects.

History[]

Baby Woodrose was started in 2001 by Uffe Lorenzen, later known under the alias Lorenzo Woodrose. Initially Baby Woodrose was a personal side-project, who was still drummer and songwriter in On Trial at the time. Lorenzo would write and record fifteen songs in less than a week, releasing Blows Your Mind! on Animal Records that same year. Wanting to perform with this band live, Lorenzen would recruit Anders Grøn (aka Fuzz Daddy) and Anders Skjødt (aka The Moody Guru), re-christening them as Rocco Woodrose and Riky Woodrose, respectively.

As a power trio they recorded several more albums, the first of which was 2003's Money for Soul, released via Bad Afro Records. The album catapulted Baby Woodrose into public recognition in Denmark, receiving considerable airplay, and 2003 became a turning point. They won the P3 Award in 2003, the main award in Denmark's largest music award show.[1] The show was broadcast live on national television in Denmark, and during their live musical performance, they were joined on stage by Danish beat music icon Peter Belli. This would later lead to a collaborative single between the two entitled Nok Af Dig. Following the quick success of Baby Woodrose, Lorenzo quit On Trial in 2003, after seventeen years in the band.[2] They released a live record of their performance on Gutter Island Garage Rock Festival, Live at Gutter Island later in 2003.

In 2004, Baby Woodrose made their third appearance at Roskilde Festival,[3] playing the opening show on the main stage. They closed the stage again three days later, playing the final show under the title "An Evening with Baby Woodrose".[4] That same year they were nominated for the Danish Music Awards in 2004, though they did not win. They also released Dropout!, which was an album of cover songs by other artists, such as The Savages and 13th Floor Elevators in 2004.

2006 saw the release of the follow-up studio album with the band's own songs, after their breakthrough. The album Love Comes Down was released on Playground Music Scandinavia, as the only collaboration between Baby Woodrose and a larger record label (Lorenzo later bought the master tapes back, to re-release Love Comes Down on Bad Afro).

The mainstream media's interest wasn't as intense, but Baby Woodrose had attracted a following in the psychedelic underground, and continued to tour and release records. There were some changes in the band's lineup during the following years, and Lorenzo Woodrose lent himself to various side-projects, such as Dragontears and The Setting Son. He also played a few reunion concerts with an older side-project, Spids Nøgenhat (the Danish name for the psilocybin mushroom 'liberty cap', Psilocybe semilanceata).

Baby Woodrose would maintain a productivity in the studio along with their constant touring, releasing four albums in six years (2007's Chasing Rainbows, 2009's Baby Woodrose, 2011's Mindblowing Seeds and Disconnected Flowers and 2012's Third Eye Surgery.). The band also made appearances at notable festivals such as Roadburn Festival (2008),[5] Duna Jam (2008, 2013),[6][7] Yellowstock (2010),[8] Psychedelic Network Festival (2011),[9] Stoned From The Underground and Banana Space Festival to name a few.[10]

Though the exact years would be unknown the band would change into a quartet and serve with different backing members, along with a second guitarist. On 16 September 2016 Baby Woodrose would release their ninth album Freedom, a more politically driven take on the band's powerful, distorted rock sound. Since the album release, Baby Woodrose's live line-up has included two former members, Anders Grøn (Fuzz Daddy) on drums and Anders Skjødt (Moody Guru) on bass guitar, with Mads Saaby (Yobo) staying on as second guitarist. Baby Woodrose would tour Europe to support Freedom in 2016, along with appearances at Freak Valley Festival and Junkyard Open Air.[11] Following a special marquee showcase entitled Free Your Mind on 11 August 2017,[12] Uffe Lorenzen would put Baby Woodrose on hiatus and concentrate on a solo career, releasing Galmandsværk that same year.
