A Live History of Gluttony and Lust (Also known as Houdini Live 2005) is a live album by The Melvins. It would be a live rendition of the band's classic 1993 album Houdini, performed live and slightly re-worked.
Background[]
In 2005 The Melvins would be were invited to play Houdini in its entirety by All Tomorrow's Parties for their Don't Look Back series, notably performing the album in full at Koko in London on 4 October 2005.[1] According to the liner notes the band had intended to record the performance but had actually forgot to do so. Thus the band then rented an empty warehouse and played the set to an invitation-only crowd, to which the date and location are unknown.[2][3] The band played and recorded two sets, picking the best performances from each for the final album.[4] Trevor Dunn would play bass on this live album as he did for the Don't Look Back performances. In various interviews Buzz Osborne noted that several of the songs were never meant to be performed live.[5]
Reviews of the live album were mostly positive. Exclaim! would praise the record, in particular the renditions of "Honey Bucket", "Hooch" and "Joan of Arc".[6] Mark Prindle would award an 8/10, largely praising the performance (Especially "Pearl Bomb") but lauded the performances of "Sky Pup" and "Spread Eagle Beagle" along with noting the song order being different.[7] Your Last Rites would praise Houdini Live 2005, citing the recording as "more visceral and in-your-face" than the original recording.[8] Pitchfork would give the live album a 5.7/10, criticizing the lack of an audience and cited that it sounded like "a band rehearsing in a warehouse". They would note that "some surprises would be sprinkled in" and would praise set closer Spread Eagle Beagle.[9]
Houdini Live 2005 would be released on vinyl for the first time in May 2023.
